When it first becomes apparent that your engine isn’t firing up as easily as it typically does, you’ll want to have a mechanic take a look. By acting quickly, you’ll have the best chance to prevent the problem from worsening to the point that your car won’t start at all. At All Tune & Lube, our local mechanics are experts at figuring out what is preventing cars from starting up. Once the diagnosis is made, we can provide flawless repairs.
Common Problems that Cause No-Start
In many cases, problems with no-start arise because of insufficient fuel supply. This can occur for several reasons. For one, if your fuel pump is malfunctioning, then gas may not be properly sent from the tank toward the engine. Signs of a bad fuel pump include sputtering, decreasing MPGs, and a whining sound that comes from the fuel tank. Your engine also might not get enough fuel to fire up if your fuel filter is clogged. Fuel filters should be replaced about every 25,000 miles to prevent such a problem. Gunked-up fuel injectors can also make it harder for the engine to start up. Fuel additives can be helpful with getting rid of pollutants from injectors.
A bad starter is another common reason that engines don’t start. If you turn the key and get nothing except a clicking sound, then you may be dealing with a faulty starter. A malfunctioning starter may also cause a grinding sound.
Battery/charging system trouble also commonly causes no-start. Reasons that automotive batteries die include old age, leaving headlights on, parasitic draws, and loose/corroded connections. A faulty alternator can also cause a dead battery. Symptoms of alternator trouble include problems with interior electrical accessories, malfunctioning headlights, and a warning light that reads ALT or GEN or comes on in the form of a little glowing battery.
